How many drinks should you serve per person?
We recommend preparing for one glass per person, per hour.
To help with the calculations when buying bottles in bulk, keep in mind that for wine, there's about five glasses per bottle. So if you're planning a two-hour party of 50 people who will all be drinking wine, that's 100 glasses of wine in total. So have at least 20 bottles at hand for the event.
If you're serving beer, factor in one bottle per person, per hour. If you've got a keg, the standard size comes with 50 litres of beer, or about 115 schooners' worth of drink. They do come in various sizes so best to double check when ordering so no one goes thirsty at your cocktail party!
For cocktails, you can either opt for one on arrival, or, like beer and wine, one per hour.
How much food per person for a cocktail party?
If you're serving finger food and canapés at your cocktail party, we'd suggest prepping the following:
- 1 hour event: 6 pieces of finger food per person
- 2 hour event: 9 pieces of finger food per person
Remember: Generally, cocktail parties aren't dinner parties, so your guests shouldn't be expecting a full meal. But, having some extras just in case certainly can't hurt!
Do you need waitstaff at a cocktail party?
You don't have to, but it would be a lovely touch! If you're not sure where to start, we can help you find waitstaff by the hour for your event. Something to keep in mind when budgeting though: you'll need to include some time before and after your event for their shifts as well for prep and clean up.
What does cocktail catering entail?
Aside from the actual drinks, cocktail party catering usually includes foods that are easy to eat while standing.
Consider serving canapés and hot finger foods (like mini spring rolls or arancini) along with platters of cheeses, meats and dips that are perfect for grazing.
