Is all Indian food spicy?
Nope! There are plenty of milk Indian foods to enjoy.
While many dishes can be prepared with less spice, a few popular options that traditionally aren’t spicy include butter chicken and korma. Naan, rice and papadams also don’t have any spice and are the perfect accompaniment to any Indian feast!
Does Indian food have dairy?
It does sneak in, so if you’re unable to eat any dairy, it’s best to let us or the caterer know ahead of time that there can’t be any traces of dairy in your meal.
Many Indian dishes are cooked using ghee rather than oil, and while its lactose content is quite low, it is still in there.
Unlike Thai curries, some Indian curries do use cream or butter rather than coconut milk.
Yogurt-based dips are also very common, and are sometimes poured on top of a curry.
Is Indian food good for vegetarians?
Yes! It’s a great option for those who don’t eat meat. There are plenty of vegetarian curries available, or if you’re pescatarian, fish and prawn curries are widely available.
Some popular vegetarian dishes include:
- Palak paneer: Cheese and pureed spinach with spices
- Chickpea curry: Just what it sounds like! Curry made with chickpeas as the main event.
- Daal: Lentil-based dishes
- Vegetable pakora and onion bhaji: Fried fritters that are incredibly moreish
- Rice, naan and roti
Even better, other than paneer, all of these dishes can also be enjoyed by vegans!
Is Indian food gluten-free?
Luckily, many Indian dishes are naturally gluten free. Traditional naan, roti and fried appetisers like pakora, bhaji and samosas likely won’t be, but you may be able to find gluten-free options.
One thing to watch out for though, is tandoori meats. They may be cooked with breads, so it’s best to check before ordering.
